JOURNEY INTO
THE BHAGAVAD GITA

A reader-friendly guide to one of yoga’s most influential wisdom texts.

The Bhagavad Gita offers insights on how to live with purpose, navigate inner conflicts, and engage responsibly in the world.

This book guides readers through its teachings with clarity and practical wisdom relevant to modern life.

Why Read the Bhagavad Gita?

The Bhagavad Gita is concerned with a challenge that nearly all of us face at some point in our lives: how to act in the world without losing clarity, integrity, or inner freedom.

Rather than offering abstract philosophy, the Gita addresses the tension between responsibility and detachment, action and insight, devotion and discernment.

In the Gita, these questions take practical form:

  • how to act without becoming trapped by outcomes

  • how to understand duty without rigid moralism

  • how inner freedom is developed in the midst of ordinary life

What Makes This Guide Different?

The Bhagavad Gita is a profound conversation, rich with layers of meaning that unfold over time. This book is designed as a thoughtful companion to that conversation—a guide that supports you in reading deeply and meaningfully, without reducing the text to platitudes or isolating it as solely a personal self-help tool.

Unlike many modern approaches to the Gita, this guide does not treat the text as either a philosophical abstraction or a set of motivational slogans. Instead, it approaches the Gita as a living dialogue—one that asks to be questioned, reflected on, and lived with over time.

Inside, you’ll find:

A clear map of the Gita’s structure to illuminate how its ideas interconnect and develop
Explanations that honor the ancient tradition while speaking to contemporary readers
Practical reflections and exercises to help integrate the teachings into everyday choices and relationships
An emphasis on cultivating inner freedom without oversimplifying life’s complexities
A tone that is serious but inviting, offering clarity without heaviness

This guide also explores how inner life and outer responsibility weave together—inviting a spirituality that is engaged, expansive, and grounded beyond slogans.

Meet Hari‑kirtana das, Author, Yoga Teacher, and Mentor

I’m Hari-kirtana das, and my mission is to illuminate the enduring relevance of yoga’s ancient wisdom to life in the modern world. I’ve been doing that for nearly 40 years.

In addition to a lifetime of study and practice, I have an 800-hour yoga teacher certification from the Jivamukti Yoga School. I’m on the faculty of numerous Yoga Teacher Training programs, and I offer live online workshops and courses throughout the year.

I'm known for keeping the rigor, losing the jargon, and turning philosophy into practice.

I wrote Journey Into the Bhagavad Gita because studying the Gita and trying to put its lessons into practice has changed how I live, serve, and relate—and I’ve watched it do the same for students from every background.

I’m also the author of another book on yoga philosophy: In Search of the Highest Truth: Adventures in Yoga Philosophy. My books are scholar‑endorsed, highly-rated by readers, and used as a keystone text in YTT programs.
