What is the Bhagavad Gita?
The Bhagavad Gita is one of the foundational texts of the yoga wisdom tradition and one of the most influential works of spiritual philosophy in the world.
The Gita is a 700-verse conversation between Krishna and the warrior Arjuna that takes place at the beginning of a great battle. Arjuna is faced with an impossible choice: fulfill a duty that seems morally unbearable or walk away from it altogether.
His crisis becomes the starting point for a much larger conversation about what it means to live and act wisely in a complicated world.
Arjuna’s circumstances may be very different from yours. But the questions at the heart of his dilemma probably aren't—and Krishna’s answers may change how you think about them.
Why Read the Bhagavad Gita Today?
For thousands of years, the Bhagavad-gītā has helped people wrestle with some of life's most enduring questions: Who am I? What is my purpose? How do I know what the right thing to do is? How can I find steadiness when life feels anything but steady?
Its teachings on action, purpose, consciousness, meditation, devotion, and inner freedom are as relevant to the lives we're living now as they were when the Gita was composed.
Journey Into the Bhagavad Gita was written to help you discover how those teachings can transform the way you understand yourself, meet life’s challenges, and move through the world.
Whether you’re encountering the Gita for the first time or returning to it with new questions, Hari offers a clear, engaging guide that makes its profound teachings accessible without losing the depth and substance of the tradition they come from.
Why Is the Bhagavad Gita So Important to Yoga?
For many people in the modern yoga world, “yoga” primarily means a physical practice.
The Bhagavad-gītā presents a much broader vision of yoga.
In the Gita, yoga is a comprehensive path of self-knowledge and spiritual realization. It describes different approaches to yoga—including the yoga of action, knowledge, meditation, and devotion—and explains how they work together toward a common goal.
Along the way, the Gita explores some of yoga philosophy’s most important ideas:
- Dharma, karma, and the nature of meaningful action
- Meditation and mastery of the mind
- The difference between the body, mind, and conscious self
- Knowledge, faith, and devotion
- The nature of Krishna and ultimate reality
- Liberation from suffering and the cycle of birth and death
The Gita can expand your understanding of what yoga is, what it asks of us, and what its practices are ultimately meant to help us achieve.
That makes it especially valuable for yoga teachers. A deeper understanding of the Gita can give you a stronger foundation in yoga philosophy—and more confidence in sharing the wisdom behind the physical practice with your students.
Understanding the Bhagavad Gita Means Meeting It on Its Own Terms
There are plenty of ways to make an ancient spiritual text feel more contemporary. We can interpret its teachings to align with modern concepts we already understand, extract inspirational quotes from their adjoining context, or study the Gita as an important historical work without seriously considering whether its claims about the nature of reality might actually be true.
I take a different approach.
Rather than asking the Gita to conform to the way we already see the world, I invite readers to understand it on its own terms first.
What does the Gita actually say? What does it ask us to consider about who we are, why we’re here, and how to see the world? And what happens when we take those ideas seriously enough to question them, examine them, and put them into practice?
That doesn’t mean leaving your critical thinking at the door. Quite the opposite. The Gita itself unfolds as a dialogue in which Arjuna questions, doubts, challenges, and asks Krishna to explain further.
That same spirit of thoughtful inquiry is at the heart of Journey Into the Bhagavad Gita.
