FREE LIVE ONLINE EVENT
Safe Spaces in an Dangerous World
Community Conversation is a FREE monthly online gathering where we connect spiritual ideas to real life. We explore questions about current events, share reflections on lived experiences, and look at the world through the lens of the yoga wisdom tradition.
This month we're going to talk about how we go about creating and navigating safe spaces in an inherently unsafe world.
The expectation that everyone is entitled to a safe space—an environment where a person can feel confident that they won't be discriminated against, criticized, harassed, or subjected to emotional or physical harm—has become a post-pandemic social reality. We see this phenomenon in higher education and corporate workspaces, in digital spaces and healthcare facilities, and certainly in the yoga world.
The intentions of creating safe spaces—fostering inclusivity, active listening, and mutual respect—are all commendable, but creating and navigating those spaces can be challenging: "I don't feel safe" can mean different things to different people and it's not always clear what a "safe space" is supposed to do: eliminate threats or create conditions in which people can face difficult situations without being harmed.
And no matter how hard we try to create safe spaces, we're doing so in an unsafe world. Traditional yoga wisdom confirms that the material world is an inherently dangerous place that's not obligated to conform to our desire to feel safe.
So what does yoga teach us to expect from an inherently uncertain and sometimes hostile world—and what does it teach us to expect from one another within that world? Is discomfort sometimes an unavoidable—and even valuable—part of learning, growth, intimacy, spiritual practice, and meaningful work? When does "discomfort" become harm? Who gets to decide? What do we owe one another in creating conditions for safety—and what remains each person's responsibility to navigate for themselves? If we can't make the world a safe space, what does yoga advise us to do instead?

Wisdom In Motion
How to Integrate Yoga Philosophy Into Your Asana Sequences
You know that yoga is about much more than physical postures. You want your students to experience the deeper wisdom of yoga—not just hear you talk about it at the beginning of class, but actually experience it through their practice.
The challenge is figuring out how to make that happen.
Knowing the philosophy is one thing. Knowing how to connect it to an asana sequence is another. It's easy to fall back on familiar platitudes: “Warrior Pose teaches us to be strong,” “Tree Pose teaches us balance,” “Child's Pose teaches us surrender.”
Those things are all true, but they don't necessarily help students experience the teaching.
You may have tried choosing a philosophical theme and then building a class around it, only to find that the teaching feels disconnected from the poses—or that you're spending so much time explaining the idea that you don't have time for alignment cues.
This workshop offers a different approach.
Instead of starting by assigning philosophical meanings to individual poses, you'll learn how to identify the essence of a teaching and recognize where it naturally fits in with your sequence—whether that's in a challenging pose, a transition, a resting posture, or the way students approach the practice as a whole.
This workshop is designed to provide you with practical frameworks for weaving yoga wisdom into your sequences in ways that will make yoga philosophy something your students experience rather than just ideas you talk about.
You'll learn how to:
- Identify an essential teaching you want students to experience
- Recognize where that teaching connects with what students are actually doing and experiencing on the mat
- Choose poses that can help illustrate or reinforce a yoga wisdom teaching without forcing the connection
- Use transitions and resting poses as opportunities for reflection and assimilation
- Use challenging poses to help students engage more directly with a philosophical idea
- Connect the end of the practice back to the teaching you want students to take with them
By the end of the workshop, you’ll have greater confidence in your ability to make the wisdom of yoga come alive through your student’s physical practice.
This workshop will be recorded - all registrants will receive the replay link.
